Holistic Treatment for Estrogen Hormone Imbalance

Hormones impact our health and functioning much more than we typically give them credit for and estrogen is certainly a powerhouse in women as well as in men. Imbalances of estrogen can lead to health problems such as heart disease, PMS, perimenopause, enlarged prostate glands and more. However, there is a natural and effective supplement that is proving to greatly help balance estrogen known as DIM (3,3'-Diindolylmethane).

What is DIM?

DIM is a phytonutrient (plant nutrient) compound made from cruciferous vegetables such as turnips, kale, bok choy, rutabaga, mustard, broccoli, kohlrabi, cabbage, cauliflower, mustard and Brussels sprouts and can convert undesirable estrogen into the desirable type.

Studies have shown that in order to have similar effects of taking a DIM supplement, one would have to consumer 1-2 pounds of cruciferous vegetables every day. In addition to this, eating that amount of cruciferous vegetables may cause the enlargement of the thyroid gland (goitrogenic), whereas DIM has been shown to inhibit the growth of primary goiter cells up to 70% making it a more logical choice.

Estrogen and how DIM impacts it-

There are three types of estrogen found in the body - Estrone (E1), Estradiol (E2) and Estriol (E3) and understanding the differences in them will help you to understand how DIM works so effectively in balancing estrogen’s effects in your body.

E1 / Estrone is the estrogen that is derived from body fat and is what is seen to increase in postmenopausal women. It is the least desirable of all the types of estrogen as when it is found in excess, it produces the side effects we associate with PMS- (i.e.: tension, depression, irritability, joint and muscle pain, fatigue, headaches, bloating, etc.).

E2 / Estradiol is the primary estrogen that is found in women during their reproductive years and it is often used as a supplement to help reduce coronary artery disease and relieve hot flashes, psychological distress and much more.

E3 / Estriol is the weakest of the three major estrogens and is seen at its highest levels in women who are pregnant. It is particularly effective in the prevention of cancer cell development. It is also beneficial in aiding with vaginal lubrication and health as well as helpful in treating vaginitis, cystitis and urinary tract infections.

What many people do not know is that because the body can convert E1, E2 and E3 into one another depending upon what's needed one does not need to take estrogen supplements, rather, it is safer and more effective to simply use DIM which naturally influences the body to convert the undesirable E1 hormones into E2 and E3 hormones.
